Iberian Airlines:  Madrid - Johannesburg Direct Flights Resume

The Travel Industry remains hopeful that the resumption of services between Johannesburg and Madrid, with three weekly flights, will increase the number of visitors from the Spanish market to South Africa.
Arrivals from Spain are up 19%, year-to-date, according to the arrival statistics for May from Stats SA.

Resuming the flights could only have a positive impact on tourism to South Africa. The Spanish market did not have many options available in terms of travelling to South Africa, and a direct flight was good news.

Flight IB6051 departs Madrid at 23h45 and arrives in Johannesburg at 09h55 on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. The return flight IB6050 departs Johannesburg at 20h15 and arrives in Madrid at 06h45 on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Sylvester The Lion Escapes ..... AGAIN

A search is under way in Beaufort West for a lion that escaped from the Karoo National Park, the South African National Parks (SANParks) said on Monday. SANParks spokesperson Reynold Thakuli said a search team had been deployed to track the cat.

“An electronic collar indicated that the lion was outside the national park,” said Thakuli. He confirmed it was the same lion that had escaped in 2015 last year. The lion which was said to be 3-years-old escaped through a hole that formed under the fence after a heavy rain storm.

The hole was underneath the fence on the western side of the park, next to Fraserburg Road, and the suspicion was that the lion made its way  to one of the farms in the area where it promptly ate a cow.

South Africa is the Most Affordable Place in the World to Stay

That’s according to a ‘GO Banking Rates’ study, which ranked 112 nations by comparing local purchasing power to the cost of consumer goods and services. Sourced from the online database Numbeo.com, the living indices found that rent, groceries, goods and services are, respectively, 80%, 71% and 65.8% cheaper in South Africa than in a city like New York. This resulted in a local purchasing power that's significantly higher than what New Yorkers face, which is the most favorable factor that puts South Africa at No1.

The other cheapest countries to live in are India, Kosovo, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Zambia, Oman, Paraguay, Czech Republic and Macedonia, according to the study.

Economist Dawie Roodt said the rand was "hugely undervalued" making it very attractive to foreigners like New Yorkers to come to South Africa, have a boob job, go on safari and still have some change in their pockets." A Mc Donalds Burger will cost around 1.4 US$, a beer in a local pub will cost 1 US$ and a steak, egg and fries around 4 US$.

How does this affect Travel? A small car can be hired from as little as 15 US$ per day including unlimited Km. A decent Bed & Breakfast can cost less than 20 US$ per person per night. A three night Safari with full board and game drives at a Private Game Reserve can be booked for under 400 US$.
